RV004: Captain Marvel - A Marvel-lous Film!

Hello everyone!

I've just finished watching Captain Marvel not so long ago and wanted to rush out a review before I either forget or get sidetracked with other project work I'm currently doing.

This film is the latest outing in the closing stages of Marvel's third phase of movies and is designed, I believe, to lay the final groundwork before we are brought to Avengers: Endgame in the summer which is a cinematic event that will no doubt upset as many comic book fans as it pleases.

I, personally. could care less about the whole idea of a "cinematic universe" because I am just not interested in investing more of my time into following stories from one film to the next with a view to just understand the basic plot. If you cannot sell me on the plot from the get-go, I don't really care...

Marvel-lous in its Own Right

I wanted to give Marvel the benefit of the doubt with this one because I have heard a lot of negative press surrounding this film and comments that people were making about its star, Brie Larson. Now, as you know, I will not be drawn on those comments because my only purpose is to review films without getting sidetracked by any contentious issues arising at a film's launch.

Jane Danvers (played here by Larson) is the daughter of Joe Danvers and ultimately becomes caught in the crossfire, ultimately becoming one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.

So far, so typical of a superhero film.

Despite the waves made when Marvel announced that they were changing the gender of the titular hero for this film, it was a chance to show people that, regardless of gender, a story can always be told that will draw you in.

By no means is this a perfect film, but I cannot help feeling like this is a step in the right direction for Marvel as it feels like a step backwards.

Stay with me here, I am not talking about in progress or in quality, but instead, a step back towards the roots of what made Marvel's films so enjoyable, so good in the first place. Did some of the later films lose that?

I don't know as I haven't seen a Marvel film for a long time, since Thor: The Dark World.

All I do know is that I stopped watching them because the trailers seemed to be akin to a fireworks display; nice to look at, but not a lot of substance to them. It feels like the more films they made, the more they were getting lost under the weight of either their own pretentious, grandiose storylines more interested in craming excessive amounts of CGI into their trailers to sell the bums on seats. Until Infinity War came along and effectively reset the bar for them with me.

In fact, though I haven't seen said Infinity War, the impression I get from people's feedback is that it really seems to be setting something even more grandiose up for the final chapter in this phase.

But that's all a sidetrack.

A Helpful Sidetrack

In a way, that is what I feel Captain Marvel is, a sidetrack.

It feels like it is a way for Marvel to acknowledge the fans and say "look I know we've got Avengers and this phase of MCU coming to an end in its current form soon so here's this to keep you going". Featuring Nick Fury and Agent Coulson was a nice touch between the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show and the whole MCU too.

Yet I don't think it really overcomplicated the simple plot that this film featured. Don't get me wrong, simple works in this case because you don't ever feel the need to have seen a whole lot of other films to understand why events are happening the way that they are in this film. That's what turned me off initially with a lot of the other MCU films. I personally don't care how the films are connected. Just tell me a story and, hopefully, I will like it.

Final Thought

I could go on and on, but I would only be wasting lines on the screen when I have said all that I feel I need to say on this film. It's a good film, don't get me wrong, just don't expect to be blown away (sic!) by it as it's not perfect.

Credit to Brie Larson for taking the film as she has done and proved that no superhero film must have a romantic storyline tangent. In this film, it would have only been a distraction from the purpose of this film; filling the gap left by the Avengers' upcoming final film.

Don't hate on me, it's not my problem if you don't agree with what I have said about this film, I have expressed my opinion and have openly told you to see it as a good film in its own right.

So far, it definitely takes the Film of the Year award for me, but there are so few contenders so far of films that I have seen, so we will just have to see what happens later on this year.

Should you see it then?
YES!
This is the easiest conclusion that I can give to you because Captain Marvel is a good film.

In its own right.

I don't care how it fits in with the rest of the MCU chronologically as that's of no interest to me so I am only ever going to recommend a film on the basis of its enjoyment & quality.

That being said, this is the end of my review so, yeah, go see this film!

Peace!
