Hello everyone!
I hope you are enjoying these reviews as much as I am in putting them together. It has been a long time since I was able to get back into the swing of things as far as reviews go, but now they are here in the form of film & book reviews, I am hoping to have them here to stay.
This week, it's the turn of Stephen King and, arguably, his best work in the form of Tommyknockers...
This book, I know, will not be everyone's favourite in terms of King's literature, yet there is just something about the way that the story has been constructed that, for me, puts it above The Shining (yes, I know that's likely to trigger some people!) in terms of fluidity of prose and development of characters.
In it, King does an excellent job at keeping just who the Tommyknockers are under wraps until late into this book and I think that works in his favour. Rather than blowing a major plot point too soon and then having to justify, for the remainder of thhe book, why they are so named.
The Negatives
However, it's not the perfect book, but quite what that would look like anyway is beyond me. Instead, for this book I think the pacing is a little inconsistent, a factor that many writers struggle with when it comes to ending a book.
I won't pull it apart as I do think it is one of, if not the best, certainly King's better books. I was once quite critical of George R. R. Martin's Game of Thrones fiction, so at the end of the day this review is just my opinion. Either way, I think it could have done with ending a little sooner, or maybe the pacing adapted to end in a more suitable fashion.
But I'm just the blogger, they are the writers!
Final Verdict
3/5
This book is one that every Stephen King fan should read at some point if only to see how he weaves the mystery of just who the Tommyknockers are through the whole of the book before unveiling them as... well, let's just say even the name doesn't describe their purpose.
As always, leave your comments below if you agree, or even if you disagree and we'll see if we can't have a reasonable debate about it.
