Hello everyone!
The next review is here now and it's from a rather interesting book I picked up at a charity shop not so long ago called "They Found Atlantis" by Dennis Wheatley. The copy I picked up looks nothing like the image I've chosen for this review, but I could hardly use an image of a blank red book with an elaborate golden trim now, could I?
They Found Atlantis Review
Anyways, this was rather an interesting find because I instantly thought of Atlantis as the sunken city and immediately images of treasure mermaids and mermen came to mind. I was not disappointed but I was surprised to find an entirely different plotline running in tandem to this. There was plenty of mystery attached to this tale as I wondered just how they would find Atlantis. This subject has been tackled countless times and not all of them great.
This book, however, I highly recommend for anyone who likes science-fiction as there's just enough science to keep this believable. Yet there's plenty of fiction as the underwater city is described with plenty of detail without being too clogged up with terms the average person will struggle to comprehend.
It would be remiss of me if I did not talk about the negatives of this story for a while. Given that the illusion for a perfect story is just as prevalent today as it was when this was written (and before), I have to say that this particular book contained a rather paper-thin (sic!) plot that means a healthy dose of disbelief has to be withheld.
Arguably the supporting narrative has to be this book's weakest point as it seems to have been created for the purposes of interjecting danger should the main plotline of finding Atlantis not prove to be enough.
It's not a bad book by any means and I do feel that I was as lucky as I was to have picked this up for so cheap. By the opposite parallax, it reminded me of one of those Hollywood action films where you realise early on that your brain can be given a rest for a while to soak up an easter egg of a plot, which is nice to look at, but not a lot in the way of substance.
Having said all of this, and arguably been a little too scathing, even by my own admission, I do recommend this book to anyone looking to kill some time on a train/bus/flight as it certainly held my attention, barring the closing scene which just felt pretty much tacked on almost as though Wheatley didn't really know how to bring the escape from Atlantis to a close so used a time jump to do so.
3/5
That's two consecutive books now, that I have been a little underwhelmed with, but then I am notoriously difficult to please when it comes to delivering a satisfying plot. I want one I can invest in and feel this book would have been best settled on delivering on an exploration for Atlantis and Atlantis alone.
Again, this is just my opinion and you might read it and disagree.
Either way, you can pick up the eBook today from Amazon.
Until next time.
