Hello everyone!
We're already three weeks into this new year and I don't know about you but I sure am excited about where this year will go for me now that I'm into my new season. There have been plenty of up's and down's along the way, but such is life. Yet I know that through it all God has been and is with me so no matter what the rest of this year contains, I have what I need to overcome every obstacle I am yet to face.
What seems to be coming out an awful lot lately is a seeming inability to allow people to think for themselves, for one only has to pay heed to the mainstream media and other such voices around to see that there are always opportunities to be told what we are to be thinking about certain things.
Today, I'm going to offer some opinion on how society likes to tell you what to do or think instead of leaving you to question more and hopefully uncover more the more that you dig...
I'm going to start in the very first place I ought to start; in Scripture and Colossians 3: -
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.
It is clear here that I am instructed, as a Bible-believing Christian, to set my heart on things above, for it with a Heaven-sent focus that allows me to discern what's going on around me in the best possible manner.
What I like to do when someone or something, comes to me with an opinion to have on something is to question more. Ask myself why more. You see, the more you start to question why something has been brought to your attention, the more you are allowing God to reveal the motives behind these words/actions that are being presented to you.
If your gaze is, as it should hopefully be, "set on things above" then you will begin to sense Heaven's perspective and thus God's perspective on the situation. But you can only do that through getting in the Word more often for the more and more you expose your thoughts to the words written in God's handbook for life, the Bible, the more you will begin to sense what to do about those words and actions.
Line Up Your Thoughts
It's not about berating yourself and beating yourself up if you don't read your Bible often, but simply about acknowledging that the keys to our problems often lie in truths God reveals the moment we begin to read His Word. As our thoughts, actions and habits begin to line up with God's thoughts, actions and habits, we will begin to see clearer than we've ever seen before thus allowing us to discern whether something is worth our time be it mental thinking time or our actual time.
Let's look at God's perspective on thoughts from Isaiah 55: -
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.
Am I clearing things up for you a little bit better?
By going to the very place that most of us like to avoid when the chips are down, Scripture, we are presented with an immutable fact that God is higher than us so therefore is higher than our situation. There will always be things going on in our lives that we never understand. We are not meant to understand them, just to recognise God's goodness in the midst of them.
We can argue all day and night that "if God was really good, He wouldn't allow certain things to happen to us", yet the reality is that God's plan is supremely over all so all we do know for definite is that God is good and that He does good (Psalm 119:68)!
"It's not our place to question God's will; that's what faith's for."
I once heard that line spoken in the western drama Hatfields & McCoys some years ago and the truth of that line has always, always stuck with me because it reminds me to be trusting God even in... no, especially in the tough times!
Final Thought
I'm not here to judge you or criticise you, just hopefully provide you with a key that will enable you to live a different way with a different perspective and a different focus. This will hopefully allow you to experience God's freedom in a newer way like never before.
So if you are tired of being stuck in a rut, down in the ground, then get your focus back to God and take it one step at a time, one day at a time. Pretty soon you too will begin to set your heart on things above to the point where it becomes second nature for you.
Peace!
