Hey bro's!
Seeing as a review is looong overdue (when I'm not talking bikes or cars, that is!), I figured it time I got my reviewing head on and pick what I'm looking at next. It was a toss-up between Uncharted 3 and the latest Spiderman film titled "The Amazing Spiderman". Turns out there is no contest really and this is the standard Blu-ray release I'm reviewing.
I wanted to give this review out on Monday, having watched the film with Andrew Garfield then, but seeing that BSB was on the following night, I figured I'd get that review out of the way before starting on this one.
What can I say, except, what... a... film!
I was a big fan of the original starring Tobey Maguire back in 2002, so naturally when I heard they were having another crack at it, I was seriously po'd at it because I thoroughly enjoyed that one (even though one numpty of a former friend said it took 'too long to get going', IDIOT!) and wondered why Hollywood was short of ideas so revisited a film that I did not think needed it...
Admittedly, I don't have that great knowledge of the Spiderman mythos (just enough to get by, and that's fine!), but seeing that this time it was going to follow his relationship with love-interest Gwen Stacy along with having him fighting a different bad guy (and come on, can it really be any worse than Spiderman 3 with it's ambitions being waaay above its quality!) in the Lizard, hacked me off enough to stay away from seeing this at the cinema!
BIG MISTAKE!
I've always said that '3D a great film does not make' and I stand by that, but this is one film that had I seen it in 3D at the cinema, I would have had my mind blown even more than I did sat in my flat watching this on 32' of glorious High-Definition-ness!
The first person sequences were certainly ambitious, but I definitely think they worked so well and could see how viewing that in 3D would no doubt have rocked the film even more!
Overall, by comparison with Spiderman 2002, I definitely say that this film 'kills that one dead' (another of my fave sayings of the moment!) and now I have to state my case as to why...
Here goes... this is a film that certainly does not get old from start to finish and being able to tell where the 3D shots were, did not distract me (instead leaving me wishing to hell I'd have seen it at the cinema now! FECK!!!) one bit and Andy Garfield has certainly carved out for himself a more believable Peter Parker for this new generation. I for one hope the rumours are true that he wants to stick with this for longer than Maguire did, because he was sew-perb in the metro sequence (the look on those punks' faces when he was unwittingly kicking their a$$es was fantastic!) and the final battle with Lizard was more than worth the wait (even if it did feel almost like a creature-feature at one point when he was flinging cars off the bridge!)!
I would not go as far as saying that this is Oscar-worthy material, but it is a right rollicking good film to watch and I'm sooo glad again that I procured it in HD because DVD just wouldn't have done it justice!
So am I impressed by the transfer to Blu-ray? You bet your sweet a$$ I am! The colours were sharp and there was no difficulty in seeing the picture at all times (that's what 'brightness' and 'contrast' settings are for, mooks!) and with another disc chocked full of extras I'll be keeping my Spidey-sense tingling for a looong a$$ time yet, bro's!
Rating: ***** stars
A truly amazing and inspirational film that I sooo wish I'd have seen at the cinema now! I'll be checking listings more often now, because of this missed opportunity! But don't let that stop you, if you enjoy Spidey get your fix today, you WON'T regret it!
