2024 Year End Review

Well here it is again,folks!

The 2024 Year End Review and it's that time of year where I celebrate some of the media I've been consuming this year. It's been a year where quite a lot has changed as series I've been watching have gradually been finishing for good leaving me with space to try and discover new shows to get addicted to.

So let's get this show on the road, shall we?

Off the Scale #81 - Any Other Name by Thomas Newman

Hello everyone!

Drawing the movie themes to a close it's back to Thomas Newman and this time American Beauty takes centre stage.

I've gone for a particular piece of music that's so soothing, so relaxing, it almost demands you stop what you're doing to consume it properly in my opinion.

Off the Scale #80 - Love Actually Suite by Craig Armstrong

 Hello everyone!

Well, we're 20 away from target now and it doesn't seem all that long since I started before I took the series on a hiatus.

Continuing in with movie themes, I've chosen one from a movie I could care less about, but the music on the other hand? This one has to get a special shout out...

Off the Scale #79 - For the Love of a Princess by James Horner

Hey everyone!

Onto the next in my mini-series within a series.

This time, it's the turn of the excellently scored movie Braveheart. I'm not wasting time on accuracies or inaccuracies of this movie because my series zooms in on the music that matters...

2023 Year End Review

 Hello everyone!

Rather belatedly, but as promised, here is my best of show for 2023. As always, the winners are not necessarily from content produced in 2023, just that it was consumed, by me, last year and made enough of an impression upon me to deserve a place on this list.

Here we go...

Mortal Kombat (2021) Review

Well...

It's review time again and, this time, I'm looking at a film I've had in my Prime video watch list for some time now; Mortal Kombat (2021).

I've some very strong things to say about this, so I'll save it for after the jump.

Onto the specifics...

Justice League Review

 Hello everyone!

As a fairly new convert to Amazon Prime Video subscription service, I thought I'd kick-off this year with a review of a film I saw over the weekend; Justice League. Now, bear in mind this is not the Zack Snyder cut, but the og release. So if you like my style, stay tuned this year as I aim to restart my reviews I used to enjoy doing so much in the early days of this blog.

Let's go...

2022 Year End Review

Hello everyone!

This has been, probably, the toughest year on record for me.

But I have to stay focused and deliver the year end review I've been accustomed to bring.

Are you ready? Cos here we go...

Stuey's Awards 2019

Hello everyone!

It's that time of year again where I look back on this year's highlights in terms of films I have watched, games that I have bought and my TV highlight. As always, apart from the TV highlight, there will be some entries that haven't necessarily been released this year. But that is just how I roll in terms of these highlights.

It's nearly Christmas time, so let's get these awards underway...

Stuey's News: Further Reviews Coming, Off the Scale to return & more...

Hello everyone!

I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank you all for your patience. Life has just become one almighty storm right now and I'm here, caught in the middle of it. Caught in the eye of the storm, as the song goes.

Luckily, my faith in God has only gotten stronger as has my conviction to see out this year committed to changing what I can and accepting what I cannot as beyond my control.

Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that my revamp of the blog is still on course to be completed, as are more book and film reviews, with a view to, finally, restoring Off the Scale to continue on its journey to episode 100, the final stop in the series.

It has been one heckuva journey and I am glad to be in the eye of the storm right now (but that's a story for another time) out of harm's way.

Keep your heads up because that's where the horizon is!

Off the Scale #61 - Movie Celebration X: A Gift of a Thistle by James Horner (from the movie Braveheart)

Hello everyone!

Welcome to the finale of my Movie Celebration here on "Off the Scale"!

Throughout the past few weeks, I have been celebrating some of my favourite movie themes and from quite early on I knew I could either spin this series off into one of its own, or come back and revisit it later in the year.

In the end I've opted for the latter, but not before one final celebration; Braveheart and, in particular the piece titled "A Gift of a Thistle" from the soundtrack...

Off the Scale #60 - Movie Celebration IX: My Heart Will Go On by James Horner (from the soundtrack for "Titanic")

Hello everyone!

We're approaching the end of my series celebrating some of the most well known themes recognisable to cinema fans everywhere.

This week, I've chosen a piece that I'm sure you will recognise as made famous by Celine Dion on the movie soundtrack for Titanic...

Off the Scale #58 - Movie Celebration VII: Star Trek Theme by Jerry Goldsmith

Hello everyone!

Having already chosen Star Wars in a previous episode of Off the Scale, I had to include Star Trek as I continue to celebrate some of the most iconic movie themes of all time.

I am, of course, talking about Star Trek...

Off the Scale #57 - Movie Celebration VI: Psycho Theme by Bernard Hermann

Hello everyone!

This week, I have chosen a theme from a quintessential British horror movie as the movement throughout is everything that makes a good horror theme.

I am, of course, talking about the theme from Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho...

Off the Scale #54 - Movie Celebration V: "He's a Pirate" from Pirates of the Caribbean by Hans Zimmer

Hello everyone!

Given that next week's episode will be celebrating Christmas, this will bring an end to my celebration of some of the world's finest movie themes. I may revisit this series in the new year, but for now I want you to get your eye patches out, get your peg legs on and dance with me...

Off the Scale #53 - Movie Celebration IV: John Dunbar Theme from Dances with Wolves by John Barry

Hello everyone!

We are edging ever closer to Christmas, but I'm going to stick with my movie celebrations right up until the last minute, so buckle up for this one.

I've chosen Dances with Wolves, a film depicting the horror with which soldiers treated Native Americans during a period of history that disturbs many people.

In particular I'm focusing on the John Dunbar theme...

Off the Scale #52 - Movie Celebration III: 633 Squadron by Ron Goodwin

Hello everyone!

For my third celebration of all things movie themes, I have chosen a quintessential war film that deserves to be preserved in the annals of movie history simply for how it attempts to capture some of the brave missions depicted in former R.A.F. officer Frederick E. Smith's book.

Of course, I am talking about Ron Goodwin's 633 Squadron...

Off the Scale #51 - Movie Celebration II: The Breaking of the Fellowship by Howard Shore

Hello everyone!

This week, we're going to be looking at one of my all time favourite film trilogies; The Lord of the Rings and pay particular attention to its score.

In particular, I want to focus on the moment at the end of the Fellowship of the Ring film and bring you a piece of music known as "The Breaking of the Fellowship"...

Off the Scale #50 - Movie Celebration I: Star Wars The Last Jedi theme by John Wiliams

Hello everyone!

Welcome to the fiftieth edition of my series celebrating all things classical music.

Did you think I'd get this far? I know I didn't.

Today, I'm going to be starting off a series celebrating some of the best movie music, starting with Star Wars, one of the most recognisable franchises around...
