Then God said "Let there be light" and there was light. Genesis 1:14 (NLT)
Let's start off as we mean to go on for this is the first in an epic eight-part devotional series as I look in depth into what goes on the moment our God speaks.
This is quite a powerful statement for me, the words 'let there be light' because it shows that, if you read the account of creation a little further down in v14: -
Then God said, "Let lights appear in the sky to separate the day from the night. Let them be signs to mark the seasons, days, and years. Genesis 1:14 (NLT)
Here we can establish straight away that the first day was not lit up by the sun!
For me, it was simply a revelation of the glory of God going forth across the whole universe as if it was God's way of saying "Here I AM!!!".
For me, it was simply a revelation of the glory of God going forth across the whole universe as if it was God's way of saying "Here I AM!!!".
Revelatory Waves
It's been some time since the realisation hit me that God's first declaration of 'let there be light' was not the sun, moon & stars coming into existence. But in my study for this series, I started to realise that not only was the light caused by something else, it was designed for a whole 'nother purpose altogether.
People who do not believe in the account of creation like to question where the proof of God's existence is and I can understand that because the rational mind likes an explanation for anything that happens or is visible.
To me, I take a look at that verse and start to see that the moment God spoke, think of it like an explosion of power began, which controversially to some, I like to think goes into lending some credence to the 'big bang' theory; what power would have to be expunged in order to bring the building blocks of creation to life!
Something pretty spectacular I tell you!
To put it another way, whilst science points towards the big bang theory as the beginning of the universe (ED - and the finest sitcom since Friends, TLP might add!), one way I like to contend with that theory is that it is one way of explaining the sort of power at God's disposal to bring to life a universe which was as yet unformed & unpopulated.
Wow! We're getting quite deep here, so I'm going to take it easy now...
To Know the Love of a Father!
If the power at the tip of God's tongue creates universes, then what of the rest of Him when He goes into motion?
Can He then not meet all our needs on a day to day basis? Of course He can!
Yet so often we do not give Him a chance to, proving His longstanding sufferance something which, though we don't deserve it, He wants to lavish it upon us anyway.
Why?
Because He loves us!
The first time I really collided with the meaning of a song like this, I kid you not, nor am I ashamed to admit it, I cried like a baby!
Here we are, on earth waiting to die and yet God, in creating all that we see, took the time to show His love by sending a Saviour for everyone, whether they wanted one or not!
So here's a contentious idea then and I say 'contentious' because this will be poppycock to some; God sent Jesus to die for our sins knowing full well that some would never believe in Him in the first place!
Yet still He did it!
What a faithful God, have I indeed!
Final Thought
What does this mean going forward?
It means that I am all the more going to serve Him, which naturally means I'm continuing to attend my church in the hope of seeing even a glimpse of His revelation glory come to pass!
God said... and there was!
Just ponder on that for a moment, consider what it means for you today!
Watch the skies!
