Creative Projects II: The Errant Heart by S.R. Cook

Hi everyone!

I hope you enjoyed my little poem, I know I enjoyed writing it!

Today, I've got something a little bit different for you because it's a descriptive piece of prose that I wrote off the back of the poem. You could argue that the poem sets the scene and this piece takes the proverbial "ball" and runs with it!

Enjoy...

The Errant Heart by S.R. Cook

A thunder clap!

It breaches the clouds leaving a spiralling vortex in its wake...

The mysterious object plummets to earth well in excess of the speed of sound causing rippling rings to emanate from its centre.

If a casual observer would happen to look up at it, their eyes would be drawn to sheer brilliance as the object glows amber bleeding into the purest white light from the lower to the upper reaches as it hurtles ground-ward.

Now, if the casual observer would become more interested in the object traversing down at an angle perpendicular to the ground, they would notice something...

The object has wings!

Immediately, a fact like that would indeed draw conclusions to suggest that the object was in actual fact living!

Fiery shards burned off the outer limits of the creature's wings, the burnt orange glow refracting the light of the setting sun causing yet more flashes of brilliance to cascade outwards.

A hum starts, slow at first before rising in pitch repeatedly forming a rising crescendo of notes so perfectly formed that any flying creatures otherwise known as birds would take the hint and maintain a safe distance from the tumbling object.

Now twitching, it flicks left, then right before repeating the pattern several times more.

Again, to the observer's eye, this would give the creature an appearance of leading the charge of a pursuing bolt of golden lightning.

It didn't matter whether right or left as each movement would add another jagged edge to the following bolt.

Zeus himself would be proud, for sure!

The arcing and sparking energy erupts from the creature's wings as they score along, cutting through the atmosphere like an acetylene torch through metal.

To wriggle is to reveal that the creature in fact is no longer happy with its current form and as such starts to change...

An arm...

A leg...

Another arm & leg!

The creature is actually starting to look a lot more human now as it's about to make contact with the ground...

BOOM!!!

Cratering, the earth knows nothing of either what was about to happen or what actually happened as the glowing, winged creature made contact with earth.

The sheer speed at which it fell suggested less that it was cast out of the heavens rejected and unwanted and instead was thrust to the earth on a mission.

It's mission? One heart...

One heart had been knocked out of time signature to the energy, the chi, of the earth.

How could one heartbeat shaken out of sync have caused such an urgent mission?

Someone, somewhere, was watching and knew an intervention was at hand!

Slowly, the radiating amber energy collapses in upon itself and the creature stands upright.

Wings flex...

Arms stretch...

The curvature of its physique reveals it to be a female, an elegant and glorious creature of terrific Intelligent Design.

Again, her wings flex as she stretches her arms overhead and the air crackles with each flap of her feathered appendages. Her mouth opens and she starts to sing a melody immediately drawing out each note as she tracks down the source of the errant and skipping heartbeat.

There!

To the left...

Or maybe the right!

The thud, thud-thud, seemed to be communicating to her, it seemed to be dancing all over as though it was searching the four corners of the earth looking for a cure to its stuttering staccato. Now that she had sourced where the heart was calling from, she knew what she needed to do...

She needed to find it and find it fast before it stopped altogether!

===FIN===

Wow!

That was actually a lot more fun to write on here than I thought it would be!

Maybe, just maybe it contains a personal message to someone, somewhere... or maybe it doesn't, because as I said; it's an allegory! ;-)

Peace out!
