Dawn of the Dragon Slayer Review

This was one of those films that I picked up for something like 50p in CeX not so long ago, but it had been lying with my other piles of DVDs unwatched, so as there was nothing on TV yesterday afternoon I thought I'd stick it in my portable DVD player and watch it.

I was pleasantly surprised by it because, having bought enough cheap DVDs in the past, I often have a standard I use whereby the cheaper it is for me, the lower I will set my standards for graphics, acting, story and so on.

This was one of those occasions where I can honestly say that whatever I paid for it, was money worth spending...

Never Grows Old For Me

I'm currently in a phase of looking out for films about knights, dragons, castles, you know the fare; people band together against impossible odds in the hope of staving off an unbeatable enemy only for said enemy to fall when the heroes realise that it is they who are the key once they stand united!

I'm not wasting my energy here comparing this, as so many people do, with Game of Thrones just because it has a dragon in it because in my book GoT is so over-rated and the books themselves are, well, not really my cup of tea in the slightest having read the first two. They are just far too long-winded and give enough clues what Martin thinks tells a great story.

I won't spend more time on that because this is supposed to be a review for what turned out to be a bargain whether I paid 50p or £1 for it as the story is well crafted. The dragon, for once, is not a poor attempt at CG work like I've seen in so many other cheap films where the CG is embarrassingly bad.

Yes, the dragon may differ to what popularly might be considered a 'dragon', but it's different yet believable enough in the scenes that it doesn't look a painted on mess like some other films I've seen.

The point I'm making with this one is that it is certainly worth seeing if you like the idea of a young man wanting to gain revenge on said dragon for a certain slaying, which I won't spoil here, only to be doubted, taunted and eventually humbly accepted as he proves worth more than his mettle at first suggested.

Final Score

The final score for this one, as much as I would want to, I'm afraid I cannot give it full marks as I think it was lacking a little something of the sparkle that I've been blessed with in both Hunger Games and Immortals: -

There you have it, my 5 star rating streak has been broken at two!

I cannot always give all the films I see full marks and don't let the loss of a star fool you into thinking that I did not thoroughly enjoy this film and would not recommend it because I would!

It's just one of those things that, maybe a second time around, I would maybe consider restoring the missing star from the rating. But you never know.

Peace out!
