Off the Scale #1 - Allegri's Miserere

Hello everyone!

I trust you are all doing well this fine and, um, rainy Tuesday evening.

I've jumped the gun with this one because my editor & I have not had the chance to arrange our meeting to discuss the future of this blog yet.

To start off my series I'm going to be calling "Off the Scale", I've gone for what is probably one of my favourite choral pieces of classical music; Allegri's Miserere sung by none other than the King's College Choir of Cambridge...

Miserere - A Classical Masterpiece

Whilst not my all time favourite piece, it certainly is up there in the top three with the other two that will become apparent as to what they are in the weeks ahead.

First, have a watch of this and if you're not captivated then where is your heart, man? Where???: -

The way the choir interchanges gives, for me, a truly ethereal fantasy appeal & naturally, it stays with you long after it has finished. Now, I'm not here to review individual performances, instead I'm focusing on why I like it so much.

This has featured in many a bath night on a Friday for me because I just find it so relaxing to listen to as it is like the musical tonic equivalent to relaxing in your favourite bubble bath.

I won't be waxing lyrical about it, just saying enough that hopefully proves why the Kings College Choir of Cambridge is probably my favourite choir, thanks to a Christmas album that I purchased a couple of years ago.

The way the melody seems to rise and fall in depth & tone seems to have the power to translate whatever emotion you're feeling that's really neg'ing you out into a much more positive, relaxed, serene state of mind.

I have, unfortunately misplaced my Classic FM triple CD set I got celebrating the Hall of Fame from a couple of years ago, which is a real shame because some of my favourite pieces are on there. But luckily for me, having an uncanny ability to remember things in minute detail like I do, means I will be able to still draw out the ones that have impacted me in my twenty year interest in classical music.

Final Thought

As you have seen, classical music is not the only style of music I am into, it is just the one that has the uncanny ability to be able to get me to chill out if I've been having a stressful day.

They say time is a great healer, but for me, give me the right tone and I'd say music is a lot better at it as it can draw out the emotions that need to be drawn out so you're not, as I was, sitting on untapped & raw emotion for over a decade.

Next time, I'm going to look at Sergei Rachmaninoff for the second favourite piece of classical music in my top 3.

Peace!
